Matthew E. White

In White's mind, his debut album, Big Inner, might very well be an attempt to re-create Randy Newman's 1974 concept album about southern otherness, Good Old Boys. Inner is certainly southern, it's definitely other, and the songs collectively tell the kind of story that always appealed to Newman, about painfully human creatures yearning for spiritual transcendence and finding that their own flawed, flesh-and-blood selves always seem to get in the way.

Franco Falsini

An italian underground cosmic rocker who was originally in the band Sensations´Fix and who is now widely praised by everyone from DJ Shadow and Sonic Youth to Emeralds and the RVNG crew.

Eden Ahbez

Eden Ahbez lived below the first L in the Hollywood Sign above Los Angeles and studied Oriental mysticism. He was one of the authentic fringe figures in space age pop, a one-shot wonder so dramatically different from anyone else that he became, perhaps, a greater legend than his accomplishments justify. He´s record ”Eden's Island” is one of our all-time favourites.

Best of 2012

Looking back at 2012 we think that the three most defining tracks of the year must have been Ariel Pinks "Baby", Major Lazers "Get Free" and Kindness "Swinging party".

Tracey Thorn

Tracey Thorn is so talented she has even made a christmas album that you can actually listen to. But then again, she always manages to succeed in all genres she tries out, from the spiky pop of the Marine Girls to the mainstream house music of Everything but the girl. We love her for that!

Taken By Trees

A couple of years back we had Victoria Bergsman singing the wonderful song Maria Bethania on a Whyred fashion show. Nowadays she lives in california where she´s done the relaxed, breezy, new record Other Worlds, we just can´t stop listening.

El Perro Del Mar

There´s very few people we love more than Sarah Assbring, her last album Love Is Not Pop is no less then a modern classic. On this new album she mixes clubby house-pop with politics. The music is a development in the right direction and much more than we could ever hope for.

Skriet

Isak Sundström from the rock band Pascal's new side project feels like the perfect end-of-summer-music. Cinematic landscapes and nordic skies roll up in front of your eyes when you hear this.

Cat Power

This summer is all about Cat Power's brilliant new song "Ruin", suddenly she emerges as one of the true rock´n´roll stars from the indie underground of the late nighties. Incredibly hooky track with the chant "I’ve been to Saudi Arabia, Dhaka, Calcutta, Soweto, Mozambique, Istanbul, Rio, Rome, Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Taiwan, Great Britai, Belfast, to the desert, Spain, Tokyo."

Donnie & Joe Emerson

The most fantastic forgotten treasure of the year must be Donnie & Joe Emerson’s Baby, covered now by everyone from Ariel Pink, Dam Funk to Hype Williams. We´re still in love with the original with it´s doomed summer-love feeling.

Carly Simon

Nobody feels summer time as much as the self-confessional artist Carly Simon. Best known for the mystery around the who is the protagonist of her hit "You´re so vain", was it Mick Jagger, Cat Stevens, Warren Beaty or James Taylor? Here we slip into the wonderful "He likes to roll" from her AOR classic album Aonther Passenger.

Grimes

The otherworldly and futuristic supervixen Grimes AKA Clare Boucher is the brightest new star in the underground scene. We expect great things from her and love all the pictures of her and all her album sleeves to death. We also hear influences ranging from Aphex Twin and Enya to IDM, glitch and chill wave.

Concrete & Clay

Concrete & Clay is the title of a 1965 single recorded by the one-hit wonder group Unit 4 + 2 and which was later masterfully covered by Kevin Rowland on his strange and widely misunderstood solo album from 2001. Oh and the track also appeared in Wes Anderson brilliant film Rushmore

Flying into the sun

The weird pop psychedelia of the Brazilian 60's band Os mutantes has left many artists around the world spell bounded since they started to pave the path  for the progressive rock scene. They sure have captivated us as well! The rest of this week's Whypod is filled with the best of the rest, Easter candy for all of you. Classic Patti Smith, lovely Dean Wareham, cool Crystal Stilts, post punkers The Wake, iconic Sonic Youth and the early eighties New Zeeland band, The Clean, among many more inspiring bands. Work hard and stay inspired!

La Bicyclette

Before the holidays we listen to French chansons, watch Jean-Luc Godard films and get inspired by the looks of the noir era. This week's Whypod 3 is called "La bicyclette", guess why?!

Graveyard Girl

”Graveyard girl” from the new French shoegaze band M83 is the perfect bubbly spring song which we dedicate this week’s Whypod. These cute kids reminds us of teenage lust and indie hearts.

The spring sun makes us dream about the summer with the tunes of Wild Nothing’s ”Summer Holiday” and we’re longing for the Galaxie 500 gig coming up in two weeks. Enjoy the sun!

These Days

The song "These Days" by the mesmerizing Velvet Underground member Nico was originally penned down by Californian Jackson Browne and seems to stay as fresh today as then. It also appears in the memorable Wes Anderson film ”The Royal Tenembaums”.
